In 2016, I noticed that no one was offering a fresh roasted premium Vietnamese coffee bean. As someone who has enjoyed Vietnamese coffee in Vietnam throughout my entire life (during visits to see family abroad), I knew how delicious and amazing Vietnamese coffee was. I couldn't find a Vietnamese coffee bean among the 30-40 brands in any supermarket here in New York City, so that's when I decided to start importing and roasting myself -- and Nguyen Coffee Supply was born. Vietnam is the second largest producer of coffee in the world, which naturally means that Vietnam contributes to coffee experiences all around the world; but oftentimes people don't know they're consuming coffee grown in Vietnam. Why? Vietnamese coffee (and the people behind it) have been rendered invisible in the global coffee conversation. We're here to change that. While we recognize the long history of instant coffee production in Vietnam, we know that change requires a collective investment from everyone in the supply chain. So we're changing the narrative around Vietnamese and robusta coffee, while reinvesting in communities abroad so they have the opportunity to produce better coffee for sustained land, livelihoods and communities. Through changing the narrative around Vietnamese coffee, the robusta bean and our culture-shifting work, we're unlocking a pathway for robusta coffee to thrive and coffee farmers all around the world have a chance to sustain and advance their livelihoods through robusta coffee farming. We firmly believe that robusta is the future of specialty coffee and here's why. Our dedication to changing the industry's perspective around robusta coffee has received the attention of The New York Times, making a forecast that 2022 is the year of "Robusta Rising" with a hyperlink to our website as an authority in this space. In Summer 2022, Nguyen Coffee Supply effectively changed Whole Foods' policy on robusta beans, becoming the first company to sell transparently labeled, single origin 100% robusta on the shelves of Whole Foods ? opening a pathway for robusta coffee from around the world to enter premium & specialty markets.
