King Island Pure Manuka

Rod Skellet founded King Island Pure Manuka in 2018, having spent the previous 30 years working in finance. Why King Island? Located in Bass Strait, King Island is famous in Australia for producing the best grass-fed beef, Great Southern Rock Lobster and beautiful cheese. With the Manuka Tree (Leptospermum Scoparium) being a native species, it was curious that there was no commercial honey producer on the island. Rod saw this as an opportunity and bought his first load of 35 hives to the island in April 2019. Rigorous testing of our honey by the National Measurement Institute and the University of Sunshine Coast, demonstrated the exceptional grade and quality of our honey. King Island's location in Bass Strait is a biosecurity gift, with our hives being completely pest and disease free. This is an extraordinary claim as it means our hives do not require any chemical treatment for diseases that affect just about every other commercial apiary on the planet, and potential the honey from those hives. Over the years, Rod has gradually expanded his hive number from 35 to now just over 400. Our production is not large, but what we lack in volume we make up in the quality and taste. Our honey is truly unique and when compared to our peers, well the difference is obvious. As a medical grade manuka honey producer, the world is slowly uncovering the medical benefits Manuka honey. From the treatment of gut disorders, oral health care, building resistance to colds and flu, and potentially the treatment of breast cancer. Being able to provide both a fine food and potentially a genuine medical product, is a truly honourable objective. King Island Pure Manuka is an exceptional honey, and as further research is completed we may well be the epitome of that classic statement, "let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food."
