Diaspora Spice Co.

Founded in 2017, Diaspora Co. equitably sources the most flavorful single-origin spices from South Asia's best regenerative family farms. Our founder, Sana Javeri-Kadri, was working at Bi-Rite Grocery in San Francisco when realized that while produce was sourced thoughtfully, there wasn't any transparency around where spices came from, despite also being a plant-based product. She set out to learn more about the spice trade and realized that the current system was an antiquated vestige of colonial times. After learning that traditional spice companies source through various middlemen and prioritize yield and aesthetics and minimize prices to farmers, she founded Diaspora Co. with the ambition of being a new kind of spice company - one that puts flavor and farmers at the forefront. Today, we work directly with 150+ smallholder farmers across India and Sri Lanka to source 30+ single-origin spices and blends. We pay our farm partners an average of 3-5x commodity prices in order to invest in the kind of leadership and stewardship that will build climate resilience and more delicious food systems. We source only the most delicious varietals available, grown using sustainable agricultural practices, and directly export the spices ourselves in order to maximize flavor and maintain quality and traceability for customers.
