From humble beginnings in a small village in India, our family began its journey in search of holistic health and better nutrition. My father, Kanshi Ram, grew up in India in the early 1900's when western medicine was unavailable. At the age of 13, he was diagnosed with diabetes and told that he would be lucky to live to the age of 30. It was then that he set out to learn as much as he could about his condition from ancient Indian books, including the Ayurveda. He learned to combine good nutrition, daily exercise and meditation as a way to extend his life. Every morning, he walked 4 miles, did breathing exercises, and followed the nutritional teachings of Ayurveda in selecting his diet that included lentils such as Chickpeas, Moong Dal, and Urad Dal along with fresh vegetables. He went on to live a long and healthy life to the age of 75 when he passed away from a bacterial infection following a surgical procedure in a hospital. Instilled from my father, learning about nutrition became my passion and life purpose. In school, I pursued degrees in science at the National Dairy Research Institute in India. After graduating, I left my native India to obtain my PhD in Food Science and Nutrition in the U.S. at The Ohio State University. Professionally, I held executive leadership positions in Research and Development at Unilever, Quaker Oats, Frito-Lay, PepsiCo, Warner-Lambert, Bristol Myers and Wrigley where my teams launched hundreds of products. After retiring as Chief Innovation Officer for Wrigley, my thoughts turned back to my father's legacy, and how I could leverage the knowledge and wisdom he instilled in me, as well as my educational and professional experience, to create something that ties ancient holistic health beliefs with modern nutritional science. I devoted the next decade to developing and crafting TruEats based on that simple diet that saved my father's life, long before western medicine was available in India. Our family's journey to discover better health and wellness through simple foods began from those humble roots in a small village in India.
